The next night, it was time to hunt.

The city passed quickly out my window as we drove downtown, Leo and me in the back seat of a sleek black sedan, Rand up front with the driver. The two demons were dressed casually for the night’s hunt, both in dark jeans and black hooded sweatshirts. Leo had on a leather jacket over his sweatshirt, its silver zipper and buttons occasionally lit by a passing street light.

Before we left, Rand had brought up my outfit with a smirk on his face. I hadn’t been surprised by the black lace miniskirt that barely covered anything and the top with a sheer back and wire cups in the front to push up and accentuate my breasts, with long sleeves to hide my suppression bracelet. I wasn’t sure how showing a lot of skin was going to translate into capturing a couple of fairies, but I had to admit that at least the clothes fit and felt more expensive than anything I’d ever worn back on the Island.

Next to me in the car, Leo strummed his fingers on his thigh and stared out the window, purposely ignoring my presence. It was distracting and unnerving to see him anxious, only making me more nervous myself that a demon like him—a prince who seemed to have everyone in his world at his beck and call—seemed anxious about what was going to happen. For a split second I thought about reaching over and stilling his hand with my own but then thought better of it.

When he’d passed me in the hall that morning without saying a word, I’d known. When he poked his head into the room while I was having my blood drawn but then quickly bowed out without a word, I’d known we would never speak of what had happened in the library the night before. It was probably for the best if both of us forgot that we’d made out on his desk, but I couldn’t ignore the pang I felt in my chest when he acted like a stranger again and not like the demon whose lips had roamed my neck in the library before tucking me into bed.

None of that mattered, because my anxiety over the coming fairy hunt was enough to distract me. We’d only been at the prince’s mansion for a few days, and already he was taking us out to capture more fae. Wild fae possess stronger magic, Marcus had explained somewhat apologetically, so it was important to act quickly when word came that some were nearby before someone else got to them first.

What would they be like, these wild fae? My mind raced with possibilities.

Would they look like me?

Were their wings different from the fae I knew?

What were their lives like, living free?

Could I explain to them that it might be better to go with Leo peacefully than risk being caught by humans?

Or should I encourage them to run away as fast as they could fly and escape it
